| Duran Duran Written by Margi Blash On Tuesday, June 13, Duran Duran performed a free concert for their fans outside The Wherehouse in Beverly Hills. The band was promoting their new CD titled, Pop Trash. Duran Duran performed songs from both previous albums and highlighted some new songs from Pop Trash. Some of the songs which were performed included, "Someone Else Not Me," "Hallucinating Elvis," "Notorious," and "White lines." Fans started lining up around 12:30PM to watch the concert and meet the band. All three current members, Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, and Warren Currurullo, were there to sign CD's for their fans. The concert attracted an eclictic group of fans that ranged from age 2 to 70. Fans even crowded into the parking lot at the Beverly Center to see the concert. Most of the fans were singing along with the band the entire time, even to the new songs. Duran Duran was formed in 1978 by Nick Rhodes. Simon Lebon joined in 1982 and Warren didn't join until 1986 when they released Notorious. Their look has changed, but we have to remember that the times have changed as well. They don't wear makeup any more, but they joked around by saying that they might actually need it again in their old age. In fact, Lebon was born in '58, Rhodes in '62, and Currurullo in '56. Manmade Multimedia was able to chat with the band after their concert and ask them some questions about their new album. MM: "What does it mean to you that you are in the Adult Contempory area?" DD: "Even though we have been categorized in Adult Contempory, we believe that music is music and hope to see it soon on the Top 40. We write really great ballads and hope that fans of all types of music will recognize it." MM: "How have things changed since you have been in the industry." DD: "Surprisingly it is much more difficult for new artists to get discovered, especially alternative bands. We are very disappointed in the current music playing on Top 40. MM: "How difficult is it to make a come back in this industry?" DD: "It's difficult to make it again in the music industry. There isn't the excitement of being fresh and new but rather there is the experience to make great music and knowledge of what to do. We believe in making music that we enjoy, and we hope that our fans will also. We go into every CD with an open mind that doesn't sound the same as the previous records. We aren't trying to re-invent ourselves and act like something we aren't. We are going back to our roots and the classics and trying to experiment with our favorites. MM: "What did you enjoy about today and performing and meeting your fans?" DD; "We were really excited to meet the fans and it was awesome to look out into the crowd and see people singing not only the older music but the brand new stuff. We make music to communicate with our fans, and we hope that our music touches people emotionally. Margi's Review of the CD': The band known for their 80's dance music made a switch with their new CD.I have been a Duran Duran fan since the beginning. I will admit that I still favor their earlier stuff, but the CD is worth adding to your collection. You might have already heard the first song, the ballad "Someone Else Not Me" on the radio. You can hear their influences of the Doors, Beatles, David Bowe, Fat Boy Slim, and some dance music. They start their US Tour in Orlando Florida on July 21st.
