California Governor's Conference for Women

Over 8000 women gathered in Long Beach on October 5, 1999 for the CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR'S CONFERENCE FOR WOMEN to discuss worldwide equality for women in the twenty-first century. The conference, which ran from 8am to 6:30pm, included seminars hosted by spectacular female CEOs and executives with expertise ranging from extraordinary women making a difference to health and wellness, and family, education and the future. At the luncheon, keynote speaker, Secretary of State, MADELINE ALBRIGHT called for basic human rights for women regardless of cultural practices that keep women in the thirteenth rather than twentieth century. Other high-profile women in attendance included a conversation between SHARON DAVIS and TIPPER GORE where TIPPER spoke about the difficulties that women face when balancing family and career. TIPPER, who has a master's degree in psychology, discussed removing the stigma associated with mental illnesses. Later that day was a Hollywood question and answer section featuring DANA DELANEY (actress), IRMA KALISH (writer), ROBIN SWICORD (producer) and ALFRE WOODARD (actress). The ladies agreed that women have come a long way in Hollywood but still have a long way to go before they have the power in big studios to say yes to better and more positive roles for women in entertainment, especially mainstream feature films. The day ended with a comedy performance by PAULA POUNDSTONE and a networking reception leaving the women with a feeling of duty and anticipation for good things to come for women in the new millennium. Thank-you GRAY DAVIS.
