RICARDO MONTALBAN, actor and pioneer for Latinos in Hollywood, died Wednesday morning in Los Angeles at the age of 88. He starred in many films and on stage, but was probably best known for his role as Mr. Roarke, proprietor and chief chaperone of FANTASY ISLAND. MONTALBAN had memorable roles as Captain Kirk's formidable nemesis is STAR TREK: THE WRATH OF KHAN, a reprieve of the role he played in an episode of the TV series; in NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD; and on the primetime television soaps, DYNASTY and THE COLBYS.
He was discovered at Fairfax High School in Los Angles where he was studying English, and went on to star with some of the biggest leading ladies in the business, including CYD CHARISSE, ESTHER WILLIAMS, JUNE ALLYSON, SHELLEY WINTERS, YVONNE DE CARLO, LANA TURNER, ANNE BANCROFT, RHONDA FLEMING, HOPE LANGE, CARROLL BAKER, ELKE SOMMER, AGNES MOORHEAD, LENA HORNE, DEBBIE REYNOLDS, KATHERINE ROSS, SALLY KIRKLAND and ANNE MARGARET. Not bad for a skinny kid from Mexico.
"Mexico is not a nice-sounding word and Hollywood is at fault for this because we have been portrayed in this ungodly manner." RICARDO MONTALBAN notwithstanding. |

ASCAP UNWRAPS TOP 25 HOLIDAY SONGS
"Winter Wonderland" Tops Most Performed Song List
Covering Past Five Years
New York, NY, November 24, 2008: As the countdown to the Holidays begins and seasonal music fills the airwaves, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) – the first and leading U.S. Performing Rights Organization representing over 330,000 music creators and copyright owners – today announced its Top 25 most performed holiday songs for the past five years, based on performance data tracked by radio airplay monitoring service Mediaguide.
Mediaguide, co-owned by ASCAP, was launched in 2002 to monitor radio broadcast music in real-time and facilitate the accurate distribution of royalty payments to songwriters, composers and publishers. Its proprietary technology and network of over 2,700 radio stations currently tracks more stations and total airplay than any other monitoring service in the U.S.
Members of the press who would like a custom week-to-week or local run of "real-time" 2008 holiday song airplay may contact Kathleen Reynolds at 917-595-3036 or kreynolds@cooperkatz.com.
Marilyn Bergman, ASCAP President and Chairman, said: “More than anything else, music sets the mood for the Holidays, evoking the magic of the season and memories of Holidays past. These timeless classics have been recorded by artists in every genre, yet each song retains the original stamp of its creators.”
Topping the list for the second time is "Winter Wonderland" by Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith. This perennial classic, written in 1934, was an instant hit for legendary bandleader Guy Lombardo And His Royal Canadians who took it to the #2 spot on the Billboard charts the same year. 1946 recordings by the Andrews Sisters and Perry Como established the song as a Yuletide favorite. Versions by the Eurythmics, Jewel and Air Supply are frequently heard on radio today.
Re-entering the Top 25 list after a brief hiatus is "This Christmas," written by Donny Hathaway and Nadine McKinnor. Featured on the 1968 Soulful Christmas compilation album, the song has been recorded by numerous artists including Gladys Knight, the Temptations, Peabo Bryson, Usher, Ruben Studdard and Gloria Estefan. It was also featured on the Soundtrack for the 2002 movie Friday After Next starring Ice Cube. The Top 25 most performed ASCAP holiday songs of the past five years are listed below. Each song includes songwriter credits, and cites the most popular artist version played on radio. Have a lovely afternoon and a wonderful Holiday season! |
It is a rare joy these days to see a feature motion picture that delivers the promise of the American film experience, a journey, an escape, a fantasy, a jolt. Motion pictures just don’t do it the way they used to, for me anyway. It’s been a long time since I left the theater thoroughly exhilarated, taken for the whole ride, no second thoughts, no lack of enthusiasm.
PRIDE AND GLORY is one of those films that grabs you from the very beginning, and whisks you away to another world, keeps you there, engrossed in its detail, its passion, and then lets you off, wishing for more. It’s not a walk in the park, to be sure. This is a gritty, real life drama, a wallow in the underbelly of big city life, New York City life. With cops and robbers, mostly cops themselves, bringing a stinging dose of reality to my idyllic world.
Life is ugly and complicated, and things get all gummed up, especially if you are a cop, in New York City.
The tale is not a new one. SERPICO, from my childhood told essentially the same story, as did THE PROFESSIONAL, or THE DEPARTED, from more modern times. Cops on the take, cops looking after their, cops acting like gods, making the rules, enforcing the rules, breaking the rules and obliterating our notions of peace and freedom. Forget protect and serve, it doesn’t exist, at least not in this world.
The powerful point of the film, is that it takes place in a typical, honorable, glorified family. JON VOIGHT is the patriarch, the legendary cop, on the verge of retirement, with 2 sons, played expertly by NOAH EMMERICH and ED NORTON. He has a son-in-law, powerfully portrayed by COLIN FARRELL, rounding out the pride, police family in which this drama plays out.
And drama it is. The movie never wavers from its hard-hitting path through the minefields of police business in the big city. ED NORTON is reluctantly pulled back into the life, after falling away from the “family business” as a result of a moral dilemma that is slowly revealed throughout the length of the film. He is both loyal, and resistant to his family ties, succumbing to the will of his still domineering, and fully in command father.
He embarks on unraveling a complex, morass of negligence and greed, and outright criminal and immoral behavior that infiltrates not only the family, but the entire police department. It is stunning, and depressing, and fully engaging.
This is a movie you must see, so I will refrain from any other details on the plot, only to say, once again, that it is not an original story.
It is the acting, which if not original, is uncommonly superb. Every single player that takes the screen is engulfing, from a bit cop trapped between good and evil, to a spouse with a terminal disease. JON VOIGHT is first rate as always, playing an aging, perhaps alcoholic, head of this clan, on the verge of breakdown as a result of the cruelty of growing old, or the accumulation of evil he has had to digest, or so many other t hings. He is superb.
As is NORTON and FARREL who square off in a number of scenes that are jaw dropping in their power, and surprise. COLIN is scary aggressive, all the while portraying a devout and dedicated family man trying to please a wife and shelter two young kids. The level of depravity, the force of his anger is so palpable here.
NOAH EMMERICH is just as good as the captain responsible for the collapse, not only of his family, from his cancer-stricken wife, also tremendously played by JENNIFER EHLE, to his extended relatives, but further out to his squad of police officers, all of which comes crumbling down. EMMERICH stands alongside VOIGHT, NORTON and FARRELL in this superbly cast work, and holds his own, without a doubt. The ensemble cast is first rate, from top to bottom.
Look for Best Picture consideration, and acting nods for a host of players here.
The movie, and the performance are that good. Best this year. By far.
