ASCAP 15TH ANNUAL RHYTHM & SOUL MUSIC CELEBRATION
6.17.2002
by Sashya Waterman
The AMERICAN SOCIETY OF COMPOSERS, AUTHORS AND PUBLISHERS honored urban musics top writers and publishers of 2001 at a gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Monday, June 17, 2002. The winners are the chosen because they have the most performed songs of the year. The reigning princess of Hip-Hop and R&B, ASHANTI, hosted the show along with SoCal native rapper, DJ QUIK. And "oh boy" what fun the music folks had.
In addition to the recognition of awards recipients, the evening featured a tribute to the legendary group, EARTH WIND & FIRE, recipients of the prestigious heritage award. STEVIE WONDER and JIMMY JAM showed up to welcome the group to the stage. Mr. Jam returned to the many distractions in LA for several special events for the week. He honored JANET JACKSON at a Grammy Governors Award luncheon on Thursday and attended a Parkinsons Disease fundraiser hosted by RODNEY and HOLLY ROBINSON-PEETE on Saturday. The Minneapolis son has been busy partying and doing what he does best. Hes been working with a lot of female artists, WHITNEY HOUSTON, ARETHA FRANKLIN, TONI BRAXTON and TLC. The veteran producer would love to get SADE in the studio the next time she wants to work on an album. Yeah, him and everyone else.
Another Minneapolis native RL, of the group NEXT and cousin to EWFs PHILIP BAILEY, enjoyed accolades for the evening. The crooner sings about, "broken hearts, loneliness, TV commercials, DJs, interviewers, everything." He feels blessed with his gift of song, "angels throw music notes and words into my head, its like Im not even writing it. I cant take full credit for it. Every record takes me 15-20 minutes to write
"Too Close" took 20 minutes to write." RL took home a R&S award for his help in writing JAHEIMS hit "Just in Case."
Philadelphia, PA native MUSIQ SOUL CHILD grabbed an R&S award for "Just Friends (Sunny)." Musiq is about to go out on a summer tour with ALICIA KEYS. The shows host Ashanti enjoys stepping on stage and performing and having everyone sing the lyrics to her records. One day she hopes to work with MARY J. BLIGE. Televisions MALCOLM JAMAL WARNER was a surprise guest for the evening. He is a member of ASCAP and plays bass in his band, MILES LONG. All of the partygoers enjoyed an evening of dinner, dessert and great music.

New Shark Lagoon Opens in Long Beach
The first ever full scale touch exhibit opens June 14, 2002
Sharks-the ocean's ultimate predators have navigated the seas for 400 million years, long before the first dinosaurs roamed the Earth. For generations, countless tales and accounts of close encounters have inspired fear and awe of these powerful and graceful creatures. Starting June 14, 2002, the Aquarium of the Pacific will pay homage to these remarkable and misunderstood animals with the ultimate interactive exhibit ñ Shark Lagoon. With more than 150 sharks you can touch and some you cannot, Shark Lagoon will allow the public to get closer to sharks than they could ever imagined.
The 10,000 square-foot Lagoon will offer visitors the opportunity to touch bamboo, nurse, epaulette and zebra sharks in shallow pools as well as sting rays (without the stingers!). An expansive exhibit, featuring above-and below water views, will allow guests to get nose-to-nose with large, toothy sharks. Sand tiger (endangered in Australia), zebra, nurse and whitetip reef sharks as well as large rays will be featured in the viewing area. Special daily feeding presentations will allow guests to experience the awesome power of these apex predators.
In addition to the 90,000 gallon shark touch pools and exhibit, interactives/displays will also showcase the power and grace of these incredible animals. Shark senses, sizes, teeth, reproduction, conversation and importance in the ocean food chain will be highlighted through these displays. A giant water-squirting squid will allow children of all ages to have fun while learning about defenses certain animals use to avoid shark attacks. Contrary to popular belief, shark attacks are rare. World-wide only 5-15 people die from shark attacks annually; in the U.S. on average, only one person a year dies from a shark attack-according to Wildlife Conservation. In the U.S. annually, people are 30 times more likely to be killed by a lightning strike than by a shark attack, according to the International Shark Attack Files.

Manmade's crew had a wonderful day out at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. It's a great place to take the whole family. Some precautions for Parents: Plan on you and especially your little ones to get a little wet. The pools where you can touch the sharks are a bit deep so don't wear any long sleeves and watch out for the water squirting squid because the water shoots out if your standing by the shark statue. Trust us! Let's just say it was a nice day in the sun so we dried up fast. But it was fun.

POLITICALLY IRONIC
5.14.02
By: Memo Menos
ABC had had enough of the free speech of BILL MAHER. He has been a thorn in their sides for some time now, having alienated advertisers, go vernment officials and network executives with his frank commentary on the world according to MAHER. The irony that a show that spat in the face of political correctness is the victim of its own lack of same is more than a little humorous. And MAHER had to expect it would happen sooner or later.
It is perhaps even more ironic that POLITICALLY INCORRECT is being replaced by a late-night talk show hosted by JIMMY KIMMEL, one of the hosts of a show far more politically incorrect than MAHERS effort, THE MAN SHOW. Either KIMMEL will have to clean up his act or the networks at ABC, and its parent DISNEY, will be wielding the axe again sometime soon.
