JOHN SHAFT 2000

Don’t go to this one thinking that you’ll see a remake of the 1970’s blockbuster of the same name. Rather SAM JACKSON, the 2000 film’s star, has continued the franchise the same way PIERCE BROSNAN picked up where TIMOTHY DALTON left off in the JAMES BOND series. The new SHAFT has Sam as the nephew and namesake of the original John Shaft, first played by RICHARD ROUNDTREE in 1971. Roundtree even makes a few cameos in this film. No one but Jackson could put on that leather coat and glide through the streets of New York City commanding so much respect as John Shaft does.

In this episode (I hope this becomes a series like the first one), Shaft tries to convict Walter Wade, Jr. (British actor, CHRISTIAN BALE) the son of a powerful New York councilman, of murder. Of course, Wade’s connections run deep and it’s easy for him to skip the easily raised $200,000 bail and flee to Switzerland. But when he returns after 2 years Shaft is waiting for him and not planning to let him get away again. Wade and Shaft look for the only eyewitness to the crime and all the excitement and danger continues until you know who wins in the end. Yeah, it’s pretty formulaic but the action, performances and dialogue is so cool that you can’t help but love it!
