SERENA STILL UNBEATABLE

It looked as if JENNIFER CAPRIATI would have a birthday celebration on Saturday. She got off to a quick start against SERENA WILLIAMS in the finals of the NASDAQ 100 OPEN in Miami. But in the end, SERENA defeated JENNIFER for the 7th consecutive time, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

CAPRIAIT began to fade in the 85-degree heat, after capturing the first set. And WILLAMS was just getting going. "I saw she was getting tired, and I was just starting," SERNEA said. The crowd was on JENNIFER’S side, but it couldn’t stop SERENA from her 17th consecutive victory in 1993. "If anything it motivates me to win. I can understand, it’s her third time in the final. Honestly, if she was playing anyone else, I would have liked to see her win." How magnanimous of SERENA!
Serena had Kim doing the splits in Miami.

Can anyone on the tour stop her?

After she had time to contemplate the tournament SERENA was further quoted, "I’m going to actually practice for once. I don’t think I’ve been doing enough practicing. I can’t keep doing it like that. There are people out there who are working hard."

Not hard enough, apparently. In Indian Wells, it appeared KIM CLIJSTERS had the game and the momentum to challenge SERENA. It is CLIJSTERS who last beat her in November 2002. And CLIJSTERS had a 5-1 lead over SERENA in the third set at the Australian Open, before losing that heart-breaking match.

But in the semifinals, WILLIAMS dismissed CLIJSTERS with ease, 6-4, 6-2.

Meghann Shaughnessy @ Indian Wells.
The tournament saw the rise of MEGHANN SHAUGHNESSY, who defeated VENUS WILLIAMS in the 4th round, 7-6(2), 6-1. VENUS saved 8 match points, but couldn’t make it 9, giving MEGHANN the win. But the success was short-lived for SHAUGHNESSY who couldn’t keep the effort up against JENNIFER CAPRIATI in the very next round.

On the men’s side ANDRE AGASSI made it look easy over CARLOS MOYA in the final, 6-3, 6-3. It seems as long as ANDRE can stay healthy, he will win tournaments. He nearly withdrew from this event, as he did from the PACIFIC LIFE OPEN, with a sore shoulder.

It was AGASSI’S 3rd title this year, and his 57th of his career. He is 18-1 on the year. Number 1 ranked LLEYTON HEWITT, who won the PACIFIC LIFE OPEN without ANDRE in the field, lost in the first round of this tournament.
